The BJP Prime Minister has declared that on the 75th year of India’s independence, the country has entered into Amrit Kal (Nectarian age). How does the Amrit Kal look like? We only cite one example. While over 12 crores Indians have lost jobs in last two years, around 80 crore countrymen are reported to be under poverty level, at least 23 crore Indians fell below the national minimum wage poverty line due to the devastating economic impact of the pandemic and the strength of India’s middle class has shrunk to 6.6 crores, down a third from a pre-pandemic estimate of 9.9 crores.
But, Gautam Adani, India’s and Asia’s second-richest person, added $49 billion to his wealth last year—more than the net addition of wealth by the top three global billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnoult, the ‘2022 M3M Hurun Global Rich List’ said in March this year. Mukesh Ambani, who runs the oil-to-retail conglomerate Reliance Industries, continues to be the richest Indian with a wealth of $103 billion, a 24% rise year-on-year. In the last 10 years, Mukesh Ambani’s wealth has grown 400% while Gautam Adani has seen a 1,830% increase. (Source: The Wire 17-03-22)
