Comrade Provash Ghosh, General Secretary, SUCI(C), has issued the following statement on 12.08.2022:
“We vehemently oppose the notification of the BJP-led central government that highly undemocratic black Criminal Procedure (Identification) Act, 2022, would come into force on 4 August 2022. The Act, passed in Parliament in April this year, expands the powers of the administrative authorities to collect biometric and behavioural data of the convicts, arrested persons as well as undertrials and provides for the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) to store this data for up to 75 years. The data can be shared with other law enforcement agencies as well. The Act evidently gives sweeping powers to law enforcement agencies to collect data from people accused in any crime, making no distinction with regards to the gravity of the offence they have been accused of and is thus subversive of human rights. Clearly this is another serious political attack on the people and smacks of fascist autocratic objective. All democratic-minded people need to rise up in united protest to compel the government to repeal the act.”
