Strongly condemning Sri Amit Shah’s statement regarding official language of India, Comrade Provash Ghosh, General Secretary, SUCI (Communist), has issued the following statement to the press on 10 April 2022:
“SUCI (Communist) vehemently condemns the statement made by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah during the 37th meeting of the Parliamentary Official Language Committee in New Delhi pitching for Hindi as the only official language of India, and also a lingua franca in contravention of the policy statement made by the Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1963 in Parliament that alongwith Hindi English also will remain as the official language of India. Again it is to be recalled that later on the same standpoint was also reiterated by the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri.
Now Amit Shah is attempting to reverse it by abandoning English and imposing Hindi. In a multilingual state like India imposition of Hindi on the non-Hindi speaking people is highly undemocratic and unacceptable.
Also as English is a window for the Indians to acquire the latest advanced knowledge in all fields, common masses in India have realised the necessity of learning English. In consequence ultimately they would be deprived of it whereas the well-to-do families would get access to learning English and it would further widen the gap between the rich and the poor common masses of the country.
Since BJP came to power it has been attempting to implement its slogan ‘Hindi Hindu Hindustan’ and divide the people of the country on communal, lingual and regional lines. When people are facing untold miseries and problems due to petrol-diesel-gas price hike, increased taxes, unemployment, etc., the BJP led central government is attempting to divert people’s attention from the burning issues.
We strongly condemn the undemocratic and unscientific language policy of the BJP and call upon the people to resist this policy and continue with multifold strength their on-going united movements against the anti-people policies of the government and not allow any breach in the much cherished unity of the exploited common people of India.”
