SUCI(C) strongly condemns the arbitrary and shocking announcement of the Home Ministry of the Indian Government about the sudden nomination of three MLAs to the State Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Puducherry

Shri Provash Ghosh, General Secretary, SUCI(Communist), has issued the following statement today:

The Central Committee of the SUCI(C) strongly condemns the arbitrary and shocking announcement of the Home Ministry of the Indian Government about the sudden nomination of three MLAs to the State Legislative Assembly of the Union Territory of Puducherry (previously Pondicherry) on the recommendation of the Lieutenant Governor. It is a preposterous,  wanton and undemocratic harmful act of injustice inflicted on the people of Puducherry and their electoral rights.

The announcement and the appointment without the due legitimate proposal and recommendation of the people’s elected government in power speaks volumes about the hidden interest of the Central BJP Government, working hand in glove with the  Lieutenant Governor, Kiran Bedi. Ever since her appointment as Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry, she has been charged with developing contradictions and conflicts with the government in power in the state This is telling upon the daily life of the general masses with many routine administrative activities being paralysed by the high-handed acts of interference by the nominated Lt Governor into the affairs of the functioning of the elected state government.

Ever since Puducherry gained independence from French colonial rule, and its merger with India, not even a single representative of the BJP has been elected by the people, who have consistently resisted its entry into the state legislature as attested by the pathetic performances of its candidates in all elections so far.

In this background, the nomination of the BJP state president, who incidentally was a losing candidate in the last Assembly elections, the BJP state treasurer, and another man of Hindutva brigade, running a private school, into the Assembly is a mockery of people’s will and people’s right both in spirit and practice.

The SUCI(C) demands the withdrawal of the nominations of these persons as MLAS and requests the intervention of the President to set right this unjustifiable interference by the Central Government and riding roughshod over the rights of the elected state government. The SUCI(C) also appeals to the people of the state as well as the well-meaning, democratic minded citizens of not only Puducherry but throughout the country to raise their voice unitedly against such blatant anti-democratic, authoritarian measures being increasingly resorted to by the BJP Central government ever since it assumed power.
