Karnataka State Pre University board (11th and 12th Standard) recently released a circular stating that the upcoming midterm examination of Second Pre University (PU) students would be a board examination and the marks scored would be considered as final result of the student if final examinations would be cancelled due to third wave.
This move was in stark contrast to the existing norm, wherein midterm examination was only a college level examination whose result was not considered for final result of the student. This decision was declared in an absolutely undemocratic and autocratic manner. AIDSO Karnataka State Committee immediately took up the issue after many lecturers and students appealed before the organisation in deep fear and anxiety. Already entire education community is reeling under the terrible effect of Covid pandemic and subsequent lockdown. This academic year has been a challenging one and students are struggling along with teaching community to overcome the grave situation. In midst of such a turbulent academic year, this decision came as a rude shock to them. AIDSO Karnataka called for a State wide protest day on 16 November 2021 and immediately released a press statement condemning the decision. The response for both statement and call for protest was overwhelming. Thousands of students participated in the protests across the state. Even association of principals and teachers released a statement criticizing the board. Under pressure of protest movement, the board was forced to convene a meeting of principals and a circular was released revoking the earlier decision.
This was a huge victory for the students’ movement. Several principals and teachers wholeheartedly congratulated AIDSO activists. Even Media reported that board was compelled to retreat due to the surging protests under the banner of AIDSO. Over 6 lakh students studying in Second PU have got the relief due to this movement. After a successful movement of Undergraduate, Postgraduate and polytechnic students two months back, this was another prominent struggle of Karnataka Student Community under the aegis of AIDSO which has captured the attention of entire education community of the state.
