In protest of the rape of a 22 year old Sikkimese lady living in
Delhi, on 14th May in Gurgaon, Delhi, this year a protest rally of
students of Sikkim was organised by AIDSO(Sikkim State Organising
Committee) in Gangtok, the Capital of Sikkim, on 16th May. The rally
started from Tadong Government College and marched upto M G Marg where
a meeting was held. Com. Shankar Sharma, the Jt. Convenor of AIDSO
state organising committee, led the rally. In demand of immediate
arrest of and stringent punishment to the culprits, permanent measures
for safety and security of the girls going to Delhi from North East,
and other demands a mass signature campaign was organised in Sikkim
University and Tadong Governmewnt College, signed by more than 1200
students. The meeting at M G Marg was addressed by Shankar Sharma.
Com. Bhanubhakta Sharma, the state AIDSO Treasurer, read out the
memorandum to the student gathering. Many common people also supported
and took part in the rally. The organisers submitted the memorandum
with mass signature, to the Governor of the state and forwarded its
copy to the State Chief Minister, and issued an ultimatum that if
appropriate step is not taken within one week the movement will be
uplifted to highewr stage
