Comrade Debaprasad Sarkar, veteran member of the Politburo and Central Committee, SUCI(C), South 24 Parganas (West Bengal) District Secretary, SUCI(C) and 7-time MLA of West Bengal from 1977 to 2011, breathed his last on 28 June 2022 at 1-30 PM at Calcutta Heart Clinic and Hospital following cardio respiratory failure. He was 87. He was admitted in the hospital on 24 June 2022 with Pneumonia, Atrial fibrillation and Heart failure. He was suffering from Hypertension and advanced Parkinson disease for last few years. His mortal remains were brought to the Central Office of the Party on 30 June 2022 where Comrade Provash Ghosh, General Secretary and Comrades Asit Bhattacharyya, Gopal Kundu, Saumen Basu, Swapan Ghosh and Chandidas Bhattacharjee, all Politburo members, and other Central Committee and State Committee members of SUCI(C) offered floral tribute to the departed life-long revolutionary leader.
Floral wreaths were also placed on behalf of the CPI (M), CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc and CPI (ML) Libaration. His body was then taken to West Bengal Assembly house where respect was paid by the Speaker and other Cabinet Ministers. Finally, his mortal remains were taken to Jaynagar, South 24 Parganas, where the cremation took place amidst tears and revolutionary tributes of innumerable Party leaders, workers and admirers. His memorial meeting would be held in Jaynagar on 11 July where Comrade Provash Ghosh will be the main speaker. (Homage in next issue)
